Top House Intelligence Dem: Whether Rice Lied ‘Not an Issue’

PjMedia By Bridget JohnsonNovember 15, 2012 – 12:51 pm

The ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee said whether or not U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice lied about Benghazi is “not an issue.”

Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.) told CNN before this morning’s closed-door hearings, at which Rice was not a witness, “to get more questions answered about this whole situation, Benghazi and some of the issues involving General Petraeus.”

In addition to getting these hearings under way, though, Democrats were also defending Rice from the vow of Republicans such as Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) that they would block any nomination she might receive for the secretary of State position.

At issue is the string of appearances Rice made on the Sunday news shows five days after the Sept. 11 attack, blaming an anti-Muhammad video for the assault.

That threat from lawmakers invoked the most impassioned response on any issue from President Obama at his press conference yesterday.

“Information Rice received, she received from the administration. That information is what she knew at that time,” Ruppersberger said.

“Whether or not she knew other information and whether or not she told the truth, that is not an issue here. So I think the president made a comment about that yesterday that she received information from his administration and that’s what she went forward with,” he said. “That is one of the issues and one of the concerns we had because we, on the Intelligence Committee, received the same information initially. Since the interviews and the meetings we had yesterday, a lot of that is being cleared up.”

Ruppersberger wouldn’t say whether he would support a Rice nomination.

“I’m the ranking member on the Intelligence Committee. I don’t vote on that. As far as I know, she’s doing a good job. That’s up to the president whether he’s going to nominate her. That’s up to the senators on what information comes out about her, about her conduct and about her job,” he said.

If he had an opinion, the congressman said, “I’m not going to give it.”

“I don’t think it’s relevant at this point,” Ruppersberger said. “I’m focused on Benghazi and I’m focused on the investigation, where it’s going to go, and national security. So at this point that’s not where my focus is going to be.”

She should have been savvy enough to wonder why the wily Hillary was avoiding the talk shows.”

Susan Rice has been a Flop at the United Nations

by Bryan Preston Bio November 15, 2012 – 2:33 pm
There may be no more damning statement to be made about an American representative at the UN, than that person is popular with the UN that is rife with anti-Americanism. Susan Rice, the Obama government’s ambassador to the UN, has been popular there, largely because she has been ineffective, according to Richard Grenell.

Rice has been consistently silent on other important issues and ineffective when she does engage. She skipped Security Council meetings when Israel needed defending and even failed to show up for the emergency session on the Gaza Flotilla incident.

Rice didn’t even show up for the first two emergency Security Council meetings on the unfolding Arab Spring revolution last year.  Rice stayed silent when Iran was elected to the U.N. women’s committee, she didn’t call out Libya when it was elected to the Human Rights Council, she was absent from the Haiti crisis meeting and was a no-show for the last open meeting scheduled before the planned UN vote to recognize Palestinian statehood.  When she actually does show up, she is a miserable failure.

Take the crucial issue of Iran.  Rice spent the last several years undermining and grumbling about the Bush administration’s increasingly tough measures but has only been able to pass one resolution of her own – compared with the Bush team’s five.

Rice’s one and only Iran resolution was almost 30 months ago.  And it passed with just 12 votes of support – the least support we have ever seen for a Security Council sanctions resolution on Iran.  In fact, Rice lost more support with her one resolution than the previous five Iran resolutions combined.  She may claim she has repaired relationships with other countries but the evidence shows she’s gotten less support than the team she ridicules.

This record of failing to effectively represent the United States is exactly why President Obama wants to promote her to the top of the State Department.

Intel officials unable to say who changed CIA talking points on Libya, lawmaker says

Published November 16, 2012  FoxNews.com

Former CIA Director David Petraeus stoked the controversy over the Obama administration’s handling of the Libya terror attack, testifying Friday that references to “Al Qaeda involvement” were stripped from his agency’s original talking points — while other intelligence officials were unable to say who changed the memo, according to a top lawmaker who was briefed.

Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., told Fox News that intelligence officials who testified in a closed-door hearing a day earlier, including Director of National Intelligence James Clapper and Acting CIA Director Mike Morell, said they did not know who changed the talking points. He said they went out to multiple departments, including the State Department, National Security Council, Justice Department and White House.

“To me the question right now is who changed those talking points and why. … I’d say it was somebody in the administration had to have taken it out,” King told Fox News. “That, to me, has to be pursued.”

Obama Gave Petraeus And Wife Big Government Salaries

IBD Posted 11/15/2012 06:54 PM ET

Power: President Obama calls government spending “investments.” But Obama had taxpayers invest not just in harebrained green energy schemes, but in those who might hurt him — like David and Holly Petraeus.

The late British Stalinist journalist Claud Cockburn is given credit for quipping, “Never underestimate the effectiveness of a straight cash bribe.” How much more so when the money comes from the taxpayers’ bottomless pockets?

On top of the scandal forcing military genius David Petraeus to resign as CIA director, and in which Afghan forces commanding Gen. John Allen, USMC, is in trouble for e-mail exchanges with a Tampa socialite, comes a third four-star general’s troubles.

Gen. William “Kip” Ward, former head of the U.S. Africa Command, was demoted to three stars this week after a 17-month investigation discovered “lengthy stays at lavish hotels for Ward, his wife and his staff members” billed to the government.

In our quite-proper admiration for those at the highest ranks of the armed forces, we may have forgotten that some brave men and women dressed in green can be as tempted and manipulated by greenbacks as anyone else.

What are we to make, therefore, of this fact? On top of Gen. Petraeus’ sizable government salary, CNSNews reports that since last year his wife Holly, the victim of Petraeus’ alleged affair with author Paula Broadwell, has been enjoying a $187,605 salary as an assistant director within the Dodd-Frank law’s new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Obama has made sure the Petraeuses were well within the top 1% (courtesy of the 99%, of course), with a combined government-provided annual income not too far from $400,000.

The CFPB, which is expected to destroy thousands of small banks, is funded by the Federal Reserve, so Congress has no oversight over it. Indeed, Mrs. Petraeus’ post is not subject to Senate confirmation.

It may be months before the public knows what Gen. Petraeus knows about Bengazi, but when a president “invests” so much money in both you and your wife, where is your loyalty likely to go? To the truth or your powerful patron?
